Well, I didn't know that. It seems like a reasonable assumption right? Saints tend to be martyrs rather than get happy endings. Inej thought so too, because I did a rather convincing job of faking my death I guess. And I enjoy a nice retirement and get married to a very sweet boy in the countryside.

Nikolai, in a magnificent display of protecting the male ego, just... decided to neglect this fact for several months.

So if something that hasn't even happened yet (and frankly seems unbelievable considering the last time I saw that boy he was kissing Zoya Nazyalensky of all people) makes him jealous enough to lie by omission for months, who's to say what other strong feelings might have the same effect.
